Safety Tips for Driving This Winter Season
December 26, 2013
Here are some general driving safety tips that are important to keep in mind as you commute on icy roadways this winter season.
Winter is here, and along with it, comes the cold, rain and snow that are notorious for making the roadways icy and dangerous. While it’s important to make sure that your vehicle is in good working order before driving in the winter (and it’s essential to keep some items like tire chains in your car), it’s also crucial that you and all of the drivers in your family are aware of how to properly operate your vehicles in winter conditions in order to minimize the risk of getting into car accidents.
Here are some general driving safety tips that are important to keep in mind as you commute on icy roadways this winter season:
- Slow down – When the roads are icy, it takes a lot longer to slow and stop your vehicle, so make sure that you are going no faster than the posted speed limit (although it’s a good idea to go about 5 mph or so less than the posted speed limit).
- Leave plenty of headway between vehicles – While you should always leave plenty of room between your car and the vehicles in front of you, doing so in the winter when the roadways are icy is crucial. Generally, experts recommend doubling the headway you would leave between your car and other vehicles when the roads are slick or icy due to the fact that such dangerous roadway conditions make it that much more difficult to slow or stop your car.
- Make room for snowplows – Snowplows and other larger vehicles have limited visibility, may need to make unusual maneuvers and take much longer to stop than passenger vehicles – therefore, make sure that you give these vehicles plenty of room if you happen to run into them on the road.
