Red Light Cameras and Intersection Car Accidents

Red light cameras can increase the risk of intersection car accidents because they can cause drivers to stop short, increasing rear-end collisions.

Although many cities across the U.S. use red light cameras to try to deter drivers from running red lights or violating traffic laws at intersections, in recent years, there has been a significant backlash to these devices, as various studies have pointed out that installing and using red light cameras at intersections can increase the risk of car accidents.

In fact, while some studies have reportedly found that red light cameras can increase the incidence of intersection car accidents by about 15 percent, others have estimated that the increase in motor vehicle accidents at intersections patrolled by red light cameras can be as much as 100 percent! In light of these findings, many safety experts (as well as some insurers) have criticized the use of red light cameras as a way for cities to line their pockets (with ticketing fees) at the expense of drivers’ safety.

How Red Light Cameras May Contribute to Car Accidents

Some of the specific ways in which red light cameras may increase motorists’ risk of intersection car accidents include the following:

  • Red light cameras (including possibly even the flashes from them) can distract drivers, taking their attention away from the critical task of focusing on the changing conditions at intersections.
  • Red light cameras can increase the possibility that drivers will stop short and not respond to yellow lights at intersections properly. This can increase the risk of rear-end car accidents, as drivers behind these motorists may be expecting them to proceed through an intersection at a yellow light.

While the use of red light cameras at intersections is still legal in Colorado, there has been a concerted effort to try to get these cameras banned in the state in order to reduce motorists’ risk of intersection car accidents.
