In mid-December 2013, Michelin issued a massive nationwide recall on its LTX M/S tires due to concerns that these tires were susceptible to tread separation, which could increase the risk of tire blowouts and car accidents. This recall pertains to tires that were manufactured between January 2010 and Jun 2012 and is expected to affect between 1.2 and 1.3 million tires in the U.S. Specifically, the tires in this recall were used as part of the standard issue tires on certain models of Ford vehicles. Additionally, they have been installed as replacement tires on various types of vehicles, including (but not limited to):

  • Pickup trucks
  • Heavy-duty vans
  • Small recreational vehicles
  • Light-weight commercial trucks.

Although Michelin reports that no injuries or deaths have been reportedly linked to the defective tires that triggered this recall, the company did explain that it issued this tire recall due to concerns that the tread on these tires was not holding up and would, as a result, increase the risk of serious motor vehicle accidents.

To date, less than 200 of these recalled Michelin tires have been returned by U.S. consumers. So, to get the word out about this recall and encourage more car owners to get these recalled tires replaced, Michelin is planning on contacting owners via letters and phone calls starting on January 6.
