The McDermott Law Firm has been engaged in representing governmental clients starting with Mr. McDermott's commissioning in the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General Corps (JAGC) in 1969.  Representation of local governments began when Mr. McDermott moved to Canon City in 1973.

Current governmental clients of the firm include the Fremont Sanitation District, and the Penrose Recreation and Park District.  Previous governmental clients have included the Canon City Area Metropolitan Recreation and Park District, the City of Canon City, Fremont County, and the Fremont County Flood Control Conservancy District.  Practical experience includes Mr. McDermott having previously been a member and president of the Fremont RE-1 School District Board of Education.

The firm regularly represents corporations, nonprofit corporations and private citizens in their dealings with state and local government.  Recent examples include representing the opponents of a new landfill, and representing both proponents and opponents of various conditional use permits for the operation of sand and gravel operations and obtaining re-zonings of commercial property.

The firm has extensive experience in all areas of law encountered by governmental attorneys, including general administrative law, zoning and land use, subdivision approvals, property taxation, condemnation, government contracting, the open meetings laws, the Colorado Open Records Act, the TABOR Amendment, the Colorado Governmental Immunity Act, employment law, insurance law, construction law, liquor licensing, and serving as local counsel and local liaison with bond attorneys concerning the issuance of municipal bonds, as well as all facets of general civil litigation in both state and federal court (including Federal Tort Claims Act (FTCA) Claims).
