JOHN A. McDERMOTT has practiced law in Canon City since 1973.  He is a lawyer who is widely respected in his Canon City, Fremont County and Southern Colorado practice area, as well as throughout Colorado and nationally. 

He is rated by other lawyers as performing at the "highest level of professional excellence" - an 'AV' rating - by Martindale-Hubbell.

John is engaged in the general practice of law and civil litigation with special emphasis on the following areas of law: automobile accidents, motorcycle accidents, personal injuries, wrongful death, estate planning and probate, employment law, and local government and special district law.

He has spoken to professional groups on insurance law, employment law and law office management topics, and has also published articles concerning employment and discrimination law.

John is a member of the American Association of Justice (formerly ATLA), and is a past member of the Board of Directors and Executive Committee of the Colorado Trial Lawyers Association, a statewide association of trial lawyers who represent plaintiffs in personal injury and wrongful death cases.

John is a former vice-president of the Colorado Bar Association and has served on the Board of Governors and as Chairman of the Long Range Planning Committee of that statewide organization of Colorado lawyers. He is also a member of the American Bar Association and of The Florida Bar.

John is a past president of the Eleventh Judicial District Bar Association (Fremont County, Chaffee County, Custer County and Park County), and has twice been a member of the Eleventh Judicial District Nominating Commission for the appointment of new judges. 

He has also served as both the City Attorney for the City of Canon City and as the Fremont County Attorney.

From 1969 to 1973, John was a Captain in the U.S. Army in the Judge Advocate General's Corps.  He served as a deputy staff judge advocate at White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico and as post judge advocate at Seneca Army Depot in upstate New York. 

After graduating from law school, and prior to entry on active duty with the U.S. Army, John was the judicial clerk for Chief Judge Woodie A. Liles of the Florida Court of Appeals (Second District) in Lakeland, Florida.

He is a graduate of the University of Florida, completing his undergraduate work in 1966 and receiving his Juris Doctor from the College of Law, with Honors, in 1968. John served as an executive editor of the University of Florida Law Review and became a member of the scholarship society Phi Kappa Phi and of the leadership fraternity Omicron Delta Kappa while in law school.

John is a past Chair of the Fremont Community Foundation. He is a past member of the Fremont RE-1 School Board, serving as president from 1977 to 1981. He is a past president of the Royal Gorge Lions Club.
