While attending college and law school in Florida, John worked his summers as a sheet metal worker in Rochester, New York as a permit journeyman with the International Brotherhood of Sheet Metal Workers.

As a lawyer on active duty with the U.S. Army, he was a legal advisor to the civilian personnel offices at both White Sands Missile Range in southern New Mexico and Seneca Army Depot in New York. He also was a member of the management negotiating team during negotiations with the government employees bargaining unit at Seneca Army Depot.

During his service as a board member and president of the Fremont RE1 school board, John was directly involved in collective bargaining agreement negotiations with the Canon City Education Association and in dealing with individual personnel disputes with administrative, teaching and certified employee staff.

Formal education and training courses have included labor law and contract courses in law school, the basic course at the Army JAG school at the University of Virginia College of Law campus, along with the advanced federal labor management relations course and various continuing legal education courses throughout his 35+ year legal career. He has attended several national seminars on federal practice and employment law.

John was the founding chair of the Employment Law Practice Group of the Colorado Trial Lawyers Association, serving from 1995 through 1997.

Recent experience includes administrative hearings and federal and state court litigation involving the wrongful discharge of employees, Section 1983 Civil Rights Act litigation, the federal Civil Rights Acts of 1964 and 1991 (including sexual harassment cases), and cases under the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.

While the McDermott Law Firm is located in Canon City, the firm's employment law practice extends throughout southern Colorado. The firm accepts clients regarding employers located in Colorado Springs, Pueblo, the lower Arkansas Valley, Gunnison County, and the San Luis Valley, as well as throughout the firm's Fremont, Custer and Chaffee County practice area.
